Good Job putting this stuff together. I will link to this thread from the Min/Max Board FAQ. This has been done a few times in the past but never this well.

I do need to point out that this thread does violate the CoC by linking to the “Min/Max Vault.” Chances are the NWN website is also a violation. Any site that violates copyright and does not post the OGL agreement is a violation of the CoC. Now I am not going to Narc on you but these things will be noticed sooner or later (over the years the FAQ has had at least 10 sites cut out of it including the Min/Max Vault, a fact that I assume most people do not know).

I am in contact with Wizards to clear up the copyright issues right now if there are any. The news thread exists ever since the Vault was created and i was never contact by any Wizards official so i don't think there are any major violations.

I am in contact with Wizards to clear up the copyright issues right now if there are any. The news thread exists ever since the Vault was created and i was never contact by any Wizards official so i don't think there are any major violations.

There is a difference between being illegal and being the kind of problem you are going to get sued over. Particularly since the site is in germany.

The bottom line is a non WotC Min/Max site can simply not exist. In order to be up to code all non SRD material needs to be removed (By code I mean OGL). Without posting the OGL you are in violation of the copyright for reprinting any SRD material.

Damned if you do damned if you don't. Even if wizards takes no action you can't be linked to from the boards because it still violates the CoC.

As I have said before you would be better served just working on material here than on trying to make a seperate website.

First off WotC is under no obligation to defend their trademarked/copyrighted information. just because you are doing something illegal and they do not stop you it is not legal.

The problem with the vault is
a) In order to use the SRD or any OGL material you need to post and abide by the OGL itself.
b) The OGL prohibits the use of non “Product Identity." “Product Identity" means product and product line names, logos and identifying marks including trade dress; artifacts; creatures characters; stories, storylines, plots, thematic elements, dialogue, incidents, language, artwork, symbols, designs, depictions, likenesses, formats, poses, concepts, themes and graphic, photographic and other visual or audio representations; names and descriptions of characters, spells, enchantments, personalities, teams, personas, likenesses and special abilities; places, locations, environments, creatures, equipment, magical or supernatural abilities or effects, logos, symbols, or graphic designs; and any other trademark or registered trademark clearly identified as Product identity by the owner of the Product Identity, and which specifically excludes the Open Game Content.(from the SRD)

You cannot make derivative products (for example builds) of any product identity.

(Complicated legal point for people who might argue with me. Fair use does not cover in any way the creation of derivative products. I cannot, for example, write the sequel to someone else’s book or use someone else’s character or copyrighted description without their permission. No mater how short or nonspecific the derivative work is)

(Also note that ideas cannot be copyrighted so technically all of the mechanics of the system are not protected however the specific text of the SRD and the trademark “OGL” are protected)

For complicated legal reasons WotC is unlikely to attempt to shut down or even comment on a low traffic board in another country. That being said it still violates copyright laws.

If you want to make the site legal my suggestion is to contact other people with legal gaming sites I think you will be surprised how helpful they will be.

In order to use the SRD you must post the OGL agreement. In the case of the Min/Max Vault the quotes of the SRD are illegal.

If you post the OGL then you cannot use any copyrighted text or "product identity" that is not in the SRD. For example any of the content of the splat books. You actually cannot even use the name “red wizard” to refer to the red wizard prestige class without violating the OGL agreement. (In this case “fair use” does not play into things).

To make this site legal all non SRD/OGL material must be removed and the OGL posted.

The NWN site almost certainly violates copyright (it is based on the material from a published source), however such copyright violations are typically tolerated as long as no money is involved.

Honestly I will tell you that, for the most part, a legal Min/Max Website is just not possible.

As long as he maintains his low quality and makes no money I am sure WotC will have no problem with his site. My only “problem” with his site is that it draws people from the WotC website. When someone sees this link they assume that WotC endorses it and they will go to it. This nets lots of traffic from the boards to that site. If WotC is comfortable providing free advertising for an illegal site then I don’t care. It is their copyright to use as they see fit.

Other than that as long as NeonSamurai does not poach from the boards I have no issue with his website. Again though, I have difficulty believing he could make a website without poaching from the boards. This is not the first min/max website I have seen. The last one petered out because essentially they did not steal material from the boards for their website and like Neon they had little original to offer.

I do not want to harp on this and I do not want to bring this to the metaboard (that would be a big can of worms). I will not say anything more on the subject (unless asked) as long as Neon does not take material from the boards (unless submitted to him by the original author of course). I would be pretty ticked off if my analysis of the Eldritch Knight (for example) ended up on his board as would many of the people who post here dislike their ideas stolen.

I post here because I want to expose people here to my ideas so I can get feedback and I hear ideas from others and exchange my feedback. I am not writing material for someone else’s website. Let me again make it clear I in no way think that he is a bad person. I do dislike his website in almost every conceivable way (poor quality, draws traffic away from the WotC site, gets free advertising, and violates the most basic tenants of the online community).

I think as a poster he is at least above average in terms of insight and quality so my only “problem” is his website (without the website I would consider him a valuable member of this online community). Well then I suggest you read my posts again. Then I recommend looking for other posts I have authored.

As for accusations I stand behind all of my claims and assertions. I find it very offensive to be railed against for speaking the truth. Except for the website I would consider Neon a valuable part of the community. I suggest you keep your poor attitude to yourself in the future Sisyfos. If you have anything material to add I am sure we would all like to hear it.

Mucnuggle has made quite a few class related build collection threads. I noticed that you had Mucnuggle's build threads in handbooks section. It might be best to make for each base class both handbook section and builds section. For rangers, paladins and many others no handbook yet exists to my knowledge. So my suggestion would be to move all those build threads by Mucnuggle to the builds sections of their respective classes and keep the hanbook section empty for the few classes which are still missing comphrehensive handbooks.

There is also telflammar shadowlord encyclopaedia, which might be worth a spot in this library.

If someone can answer the key component here then I will be satisfied. Why is it OK to link to sites that obviously violate copyright and the OGL? No, no. I agree with WizO_Autumn's assessment that the Vault pretty much falls under fair use. My point of dissention is with a link to Crystal Keep, which I oppose for several reasons. Firstly, it practicaly reprints huge portions of WoTC material. While they are not plagarizing it (claiming it as their own), they are reprinting an undue amount, to the detriment of the marketability of said material. That is a violation of fair-use regulations, under the fourth factor (see here (http://www.education-world.com/a_curr/curr280b.shtml)). Secondly, I feel that as a community that can often be considered full of cheaters, we should not contribute to that view by linking to and supporting the use of such illegal material.

What I have been on the hunt for lately is indexes for finding resources, not copy-right infringing archives (like Crystal Keep), but outside searchable indexes such as Monstrous Master Index (by World of Sulerin) (http://www.sulerin.com/creatures/creatures.asp?op=index) & Dragon Magazine Index (The Dragondex) (http://www.aeolia.net/dragondex/index.html). There are so many “where can I find xxx” questions that I think they would help a lot of people on these boards.

Anyone found any other "index" like these out there in hyperspace?

I was looking for a thread I didn't see in your list - maybe I was just blind, or someone else out there still has the link and can help me out.

The one I'm looking for is the "Best way to use Illusions" thread, or whatever it was called. I think there were actually two of them, if I remember right. Anybody have it?

I managed to find the links on my own - by digging through my subscribed threads (I have around 250). It took awhile, but it's worth it, in light of the awesome new Illusionist builds that are floating around.

From what I remember, the first link sort of degraded into a rules debate - but I'm sure it still has useful info. I'm off to read both threads after I post this.

Only way I know of to keep it in the same window is to use
{post=#####}Title{/post} but it will only show that one post.
Users would have to use the back arrow to return to the menu.

That is unless WotC adds in a simple vb tag for internal linking. eg {urli=Post#}Title{/urli} Post# being the Post# X in that thread.

but thats something for the gripes section I guess.

I link to the library at the very top of my FAQ so you should always be able to find it easily.

I fully agree with stembolt there is enough stuff stickyed on our board as it is, but how about this compromise:

Stembolt could you change your thread title from "The Character Optimization Board FAQ" to "The Character Optimization Board FAQ & The Optimization Library" or something to that effect so people know to look there? Just an idea...

It is a moot point now but I did change the name of my FAQ, or to be precise I thought I had changed it. It appears you can’t change the name of sticky threads. So I changed it, went on my merry way and then later discovered it was not changed at all.

Anyway, I can, and did, edit the thread title. And then un-stuck this thread as well. we really want to limit the number of stuck threads, it can get very cluttered, very fast.

That was strange … I believe I fixed the problem I went into each post as an edit and pressed space once in each post and then after I came back it was all back to normal.

I haven't seen what happened with the optimization library, but it probably had something to do with the recent problem that the board had with some custom tags.

First off this thread is built by people submitting their threads for inclusion. So step one would be to submit a thread to the library.

Second off this library mainly holds reference discussions. The wish and the word are not really part of a reference thread, though one certainly could be written about them.

Sorry for the brief bump. I think there's been sufficient hype about the Lancer (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5436939&postcount=104) to vouch for a place in the library.

It also breaks one of the world records (Charge damage potential, and possibly Power Attack until someone tries the same thing with a frenzied berserker). If I can sort out the Halberd of Vaulting's crazy pricing (which Sentient introduced on page 7) it will easily do so again. I can also find many other records broken there, but of course, Funny Slaughter maintains that compendium, so I'll get in touch with him about it.

There's also two good guide threads you've missed, on very popular classes:
Optimized Artificer (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=287275). Home of the Blastificer, amongst other things (144d6 per round, level 9), and a ton of great goodies.
Warlock's Handbook (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=393586), still in progress, but a comprehensive resource.

1) A working searchThis may or may not work for your purposes, but you can use google to search the boards. Do an advanced search and limit it to the domain boards1.wizards.com. The downside is you can't limit it to a specific forum, or even to D&D, you might get hits on the M:tG boards depending on what you search for. However I have had success searching for specific things with this, it just takes a little more patience. But I too miss the search function on here.

Sorry, folks but that open time in the month of May that I was hoping to spend time revising the Optimization Library will now be filled with an internship and the rest of my summer will be filled with classes. Then it's on to a career and family after that. So I will no longer be able to tend to the library, sadly the extra time that undergraduate school allowed me is no longer available. If someone would be interested in taking it over or creating a second more up to date version of the CO Library they have my blessings. Good luck everyone and have fun gaming.

-9000 gold.
-All books can be used.

I've already made one but its kinda lame after our first session, I couldn't even heal because my allies weren't getting hit enough...

I just need help making the best possible cleric, obviously healing will still be my big thing but i would also like to be a decent fighter in melee, etc.
